Been telling myself tomorrow I have to take chickenpox vaccine. Yes, tomorrow and tomorrow, till the day I really “strikeย the lottery” and it was too late for any vaccination. What’s best is the doctor telling me how people got disfigured from chickenpox and how people became unrecognizable after recovery from chickenpox. Yep, it freaked me out but I tried to think on the bright side: he’s warning me to take care of myself better.
First few days was terrible, really terrible. Blisters started popping out and, best of all, mainly on my face! Below image can be DISGUSTING, so be warned…
Lucky for me, there wasn’t any fever. Friends around us got to know about me having chickenpox and were showering me with lots of care, concern and love. Some even prepared healthy meals for me during this period and I was utterly touched.
Survival tip for chickenpox #1: Healthy meals! No nuts, no eggs, no chicken, no dark soya sauce (not sure how true but better to be safe than sorry). Load yourself with lots of fruits (not citrus fruits though) and vegetables. Lots of fluid especially fresh coconut juice!
Mother’s day was just around the corner, I couldn’t’ celebrate but received flowers from another mother instead. How sweet was that?
Survival tip for chickenpox #2:ย Be well rested and think positively.ย Look at pretty things!
First week was pretty tough and what made it worse was when you couldn’t even get near to your own children. No hugs, no kisses. Smarties were always standing from a distance talking to me, consoling me, telling me that I will get better as time goes by and sending me little love notes. On the other hand, they got to learn more about chickenpox during this period with real life example to show them. It was an eye opener for them. Gor gor was quite scared looking at all the blisters on my face (yes, he’s scared of dots just like me) but mei mei was feeling more sympathetic than scared towards my agony. She even drew a picture for me, instructing me to put it beside my bed so that I can look at it whenever I feel pain or having nightmares when I sleep.ย Definitely feeling touched.
Survival tip for chickenpox #3:ย Welcome and accept the love from friends and families. Feel touched but don’t touch your chickenpox! If really itchy, use calamine lotion or use baking soda. Baking soda can help control the itchiness and irritation from chickenpox.
- Stir 1.5 tablespoons of baking soda in a glass of water and use a soft washcloth to put the solution on the affected parts of the body and allow it to dry.
- Another option is to mix 1.5 or 1ย cup of baking soda in your bath water and soak in it.
Change clothes regularly and wear loose clothing.
During this period, I distracted myself by doing some craft works and made these for smarties. The little loves were made by smarties for me on Mother’s day and Iย created a picture of a mother tree and child for the special day.
Survival tip for chickenpox #4:ย Distract yourself with something you like to do and do-able during this period. You will feel less urge to scratch your chickenpox as well.
Slowly, as I got better, I realised this period was actually a good time for me to rest and catch up on my reading. Never had I felt this peace and tranquillity since I have become a stay home mom It was always a mad rush with housework, chauffeuring the kids to and from school and classes, coaching them and taking care of the elderly at home. The only peace I have is when I get to sit down in front of my computer and blog. Although I have to squeeze time out for the blogging.
The chickenpox wasย gradually drying up and smarties noticed it. They started to get closer to me each day and they even cooked for me a sumptuous meal beside my bed. Sweet huh?
Survival tip for chickenpox #5:ย Look forward to recovery. Soon you will noticed, the agony is ending!
No doubt chickenpox sucks and especially having it at this “old age” and being a mum but you cannot take care of your children and the household. Nonetheless managing it with care, being well-rested and thinking positively, you will definitely recover sooner than you think. Take this period and spend quality time with yourself. After that, you will be able to jump back to your normal routine in no time ๐
Oh you poor mama! I’m glad you were taken care of and hope there are no scars.
Thanks, Camie. Unfortunately, I do have scars and mainly on the face! ๐
Guess they are staying put as souvenirs…
Oh my.. getting chickenpox is quite an ordeal! Thanks for sharing these survival tips!
Yes, it is especially when you are the caregiver and you can’t do your part. Is frustrating but have to control in order to get well soon.
Oh my what an experience … could really empathize as I had HFMD… Good tips. Thanks for sharing !
Welcome! Yes, I’ve got HFMD before and now chickenpox. Gosh…got to stay healthy in order to stay away from all these nasty bugs and viruses.
Aww, Your kids must be very worried! Thankfully they kept you inspired and motivated! Love those anti-itch distractions though!
Best,
Mich
Yes, feeling lots of love from them but also feeling upset I can’t get close to them and take care of them.
So sorry to hear that you caught the chicken pox Lup Wai. Hope you are all recovered now. I caught mine 10 years ago and had to miss my daughter’s first Birthday party!! And I’m not as creative as you are, I took the opportunity to have a mini staycation at home. ?
The mini staycation at home is really boring me out, that’s why getting some distractions to make me happy for a short moment… ๐
Chicken pox is quite painful with scars and it takes time to dry up
Yes, agree with that. Worse is when is all on the face!
I cannot resist asking, your kids ‘sumptuous’ dinner are the toys or they really cook something? Can feel their love and care for you through he little actions? Hope you have recovered by now to enjoy school holidays with kids?
Cheers,Andy

Haha…their “sumptuous” dinner are the toys. I wish they could cook for me. They are always happy to help me prepare the ingredients but when it comes to cooking over the fire, they will all run away. Still trying to get them overcome the fire. Yes, finally I’ve recovered and can enjoy the holidays with them although still feeling a bit weak physically.
Poor thing! Having chicken pox at this age is very tiring and painful, thank goodness you are well now!
Yes, it is. Feeling much better now…Thank you! ๐
Oh no I’m so sorry to hear!! Hope you’re recovering well! Is it all gone already?
Ai @ Sakura Haruka
Yep all gone except for the scars ๐
